An anthology of retold and reworked fairytales, most of which are explicitly feminist, a la "Travels with the Snow Queen". The female character(s) in their different settings all struggle with the lack of place in the world for a woman who doesn't want (has never wanted) children, and why there might be so many bad mothers in fairytales (or modern fiction *cough cough*) in the first place-because they never wanted to be mothers. ![]() This book deserves attention.Ī short story The Starlit Wood. Her language choices are deft and moving. She tells spiritual science fiction stories and surreal fiction that strangely echoes reality. In "Other Places" she takes fairy tales and teases with the familiar before pulling out the rug and turning everything on its head. Heuler's stories are continually surprising.
